Normally I bristle at the thought of any kind of dyed or painted flower. There’s a reason for the phrase gilding the lily afterall! I have to admit, the idea of spraypainted succulents didn’t sit 100% right with me at first either (and these folks had an even stronger reaction ; ) It seems a tad disrespectful for some crazy reason, but I do think it looks cool, and it’s a look / technique I’ve seen cropping up a little more lately. I’m almost sold.
Wednesday’s kochia tablescape actually featured spraypainted succulents, and Carissa at JL Designs has been at it for some time (usually in shades of silver, gold or white). Here are some close ups from the tablescape I featured earlier, along with some of her past adventures in succulent spraypainting:
But Spanish cult favorite floral designer Bornay has been painting them all manners of bright crazy colors – I love this collection (especially the bright purple gravel they’re in!):
Thinking of trying this at home? James Brechney on his blog (characterized as “where procrastination and useless information come together”) asked the all important question – “Can You Spraypaint Succulents? Yes, Yes you can. Will they die?” That second question goes unanswered (and isn’t really relevant to cut floral design), but he has supplied a low quality photo of a quickie succulent spraypaint job for our reference. It’s fun to see them in high gloss paint.
