Madonna Apologizes To Hydrangeas

I can’t stop laughing about this story – while on a panel at the Venice Film Festival, Madonna was presented a beautiful single stem of purple hydrangea by a reporter.  She promptly put it on the floor by her feet, curtly thanked him, and said to someone next to her (audible on camera) “I absolutely loathe hydrangeas.  He obviously doesn’t know that.”

This is the perfect intersection of my two careers – film publicity and floral design, so I’m all over it! ; ) Here’s the video:

But it gets better – her publicist has issued the following statement.  Instead of apologizing to the reporter whose sweet gift she snubbed, in a ridiculous pr hat trick, they apologize to hydrangeas and hydrangea lovers:

“She’s entitled to like any flower she wants and she didn’t want to hurt the feeling of the hydrangeas of the world. No disrespect to the hydrangeas lovers of the world but she prefers different types of flowers.”

To that reporter – I’d take your hydrangea any day with gratitude! And to the hydrangea and hydrangea lovers of the world – keep your head up! I bet Madonna hates puppies and rainbows too.

James - Wow, I’m very surprised. After all these year, I have never met anyone who didn’t like hydrangea flowers. It would be interesting to understand why she loathes them. That is a pretty strong term and there must history to those feelings that she harbors against the beautiful hydrangea. Thank you sharing this video. I still like Madonna, even though we hold different feelings toward the hydrangea. 🙂

Kate - I’ve never met anyone who hates them either! It’s not like they have a strong smell, and they never got a bad rap after being abused in too many grocery store arrangements like carnations did. Who knows what goes on in those celebrity heads ; )

joyce - Loved reading the Madonna/hydrangea event . Your report was far superior & far more fun than the Washington Post’s version which I read this AM. Add my name to the list of hydrangea lovers…..puppies & rainbows too!

Holly - Um Wow I didn’t realize it was in vogue to be so curt when receiving a gift I will have to remember this come Christmas “Mother I loathe hand knit sweaters, you obviously didn’t know that” 🙂 Then I can formally apologize to sheep later 🙂
